Walaupun pelajaran bahasa Indonesia diajarkan sejak sekolah dasar hingga perguruan tinggi, kompetensi bahasa Indonesia siswa tidaklah menggembirakan. Persoalan guru bahasa Indonesia tidak hanya pada soal kuantitas saja, tetapi lebih pada kualitas.

Dalam fungsinya sebagai media pendidikan, media massa berkewajiban memasyarakatkan bahasa Indonesia. Media harus menjadi teladan dan pelopor dalam penggunaan bahasa Indonesia yang baik dan benar. Namun, dalam praktiknya, banyak yang mengingkari. Tidak semua media cetak punya acuan dalam pembakuan kosa kata dan istilah. Ketidakseragaman istilah dapat merusak bahasa Indonesia.

Kepala Pusat Bahasa Depdiknas Dendy Sugono mengatakan, sebenarnya pembakuan istilah dan pengindonesiaan kata dan ungkapan asing sudah lama dilakukan oleh Pusat Bahasa, namun kalangan pers jarang menggunakannya.

Menurut Dendy, sejalan dengan laju perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi, pemanfaatan bahasa asing, khususnya bahasa Inggris, untuk memperkaya bahasa Indonesia, tetap diperlukan sebagai sumber kata dan ungkapan yang emuat konsep baru. Namun, penyerapan kata asing yang sudah ada padanannya dalam bahasa Indonesia sebaiknya dihindari. Untuk menopang upaya tersebut, Pusat Bahasa pata tahun 1995 telah menerbitkan buku Pedoman Pengindonesiaan Nama dan Kata Asing.
